Buurt Tories
A comical web series following the residents of an apartment block, whose daily lives are shaken by a fire in a cellar box.
Buurt Tories, produced by HALAL and NTR, is the first online series by director Lance Hossein Tangestani and screenwriter Douwe Nagelmaker.
In eight episodes, the online series Buurt Tories follows the inhabitants of an apartment block whose daily lives are shaken by a fire in a cellar box. Within a small community like this, stories quickly spread like wildfire.
Lance and Douwe met at the Amsterdam Film Academy, where they co-created their graduation film Shalky. This film laid the foundation for Buurt Tories, a web series based on a residential area in Diemen, where Lance grew up. In a fictionalized neighborhood called Klein Kompas, they created portraits of a bunch of different neighborhood archetypes from Lance’s childhood.
This comic series breaks down stereotypes by enlarging them in a witty tone and brisk pace while broaching urgent topics — from a status holder unable to enter the Dutch working world to the far-reaching consequences of an everyone-knows-everyone culture.
You can watch the episodes online at NPO 3.
The series has been selected for the Netherlands Film Festival in the category ‘debute competiton‘
