Madonna engaged the vision of Emmanuel to create her ‘boldest, most provocative video in years’ (in the words of Promonews) – featuring a searing performance by Mykki Blanco, as Joan of Arc. The video was praised for bringing back Madonna to one of her favourite themes – the systemic repression of the Catholic Church. ‘Dark Ballet’ made it to Billboard’s list of the 20 best Music Videos of 2019 (so far).
